Spirit Airlines is set to strengthen its foothold in South Carolina with the introduction of new flights connecting Charleston to both Boston and New York City this spring. Commencing on April 10, the budget airline will operate daily nonstop flights between Charleston International Airport and Boston Logan International Airport, as well as New York’s LaGuardia Airport.
John Kirby, Vice President of Network Planning at Spirit Airlines, highlighted the appeal of Charleston as a leisure destination with its historic sites, thriving culinary scene, and scenic beaches.Kirby expressed, “Charleston’s historic sites, booming food scene, and beautiful beaches have made it one of the most popular U.S. leisure destinations, and Spirit’s new, daily nonstop flights are a convenient and affordable way for our Guests in Boston and New York to enjoy all the city has to offer this spring.”
This expansion marks a significant milestone for Spirit Airlines in Charleston as the airline approaches its first anniversary in the city this April. The new routes bring the total number of nonstop flights from Charleston to five, connecting travelers to two major metropolitan areas in the northeast.
In addition to the latest additions, Spirit already operates flights from Charleston to Fort Lauderdale, Las Vegas. The airline commenced operations in Charleston last year.
The decision to enhance its Charleston service follows a notable development in the airline industry, as a federal judge blocked the proposed merger between Spirit Airlines and JetBlue. The merger, which aimed to make the combined entity the fifth-largest carrier in the United States, was deemed unlawful by the judge, citing violations of antitrust laws. Both Spirit and JetBlue have filed notices to appeal the decision.
Spirit Airlines distinguishes itself as a low-cost carrier, offering basic ticket options while charging for additional services such as baggage and seat selection. Travelers enrolled in the airline’s paid yearly membership program, the Saver$ Club, enjoy discounts on these extras. Moreover, Spirit has introduced a status-matching program, granting travelers access to similar perks for a fee.
