U.S. Issues New Travel Warning for Mexico as Summer Vacation Season Nears

by Alice

As summer approaches and many Americans plan trips to Mexico, new safety concerns are prompting travel experts and officials to urge caution.

Sandra Awodele, a travel blogger and founder of COI Traveler, spoke with Fox News Digital to share key safety advice for travelers heading to Mexico’s popular beaches — destinations that often attract celebrities and tourists alike.

“People love Mexico because it’s fun, affordable, and close by,” Awodele said. “But they need to watch out for theft, scams, and cartel violence.”

Her warning comes as the U.S. State Department, in coordination with the U.S. Embassy in Mexico, has updated its travel advisory. The latest alert focuses on Baja California Sur, including cities like Los Cabos, Cabo San Lucas, and La Paz — all well-known tourist spots.

According to the advisory, drug cartels have issued threats against local officials. U.S. authorities say travelers in Cabo San Lucas, San José del Cabo, and La Paz should expect to see more security personnel and may face limits on public transportation.

The Department of State regularly updates travel advisories for each of Mexico’s 32 states. The advisory level for Baja California Sur has now been raised to “exercise increased caution.”

Other well-visited areas, including Mexico City, Quintana Roo (home to Cancun and Tulum), and Nayarit, are also under similar safety warnings due to crime risks.

Officials continue to urge travelers to stay informed, remain alert, and follow local guidance while in Mexico.
