Greenland Unveils Ten-Year Plan to Develop Tourism by 2035

by Alice

The Government of Greenland has announced a new ten-year plan aimed at developing the tourism industry with a focus on the year 2035. The plan sets out three main goals to improve the lives of Greenland’s residents while encouraging sustainable growth in tourism.

Greenland is rapidly emerging as a popular destination for travelers. It was recently named one of ten rising travel hotspots to watch this year. The island attracts many visitors, especially those interested in Arctic expedition cruises. More cruise lines are adding Greenland stops or even focusing entirely on the island. For example, HX Expeditions is launching a new culinary program featuring Greenlandic chefs like Inunnguaq Hegelund on its Arctic trips.

The tourism plan, called Kalaallit Nunaat…And All That We Share (Kalaallit Nunaat is Greenland’s name in the local language), is built around three key pillars:

  • Co-creation: This involves developing tourism that benefits local residents who feel a sense of ownership and responsibility for the industry.
  • Value creation: The focus is on tourism that brings the greatest benefits to local businesses, creates jobs, and supports sustainability. The goal is not just to increase visitor numbers but to ensure tourism adds real value to Greenland’s economy and society.
  • Balanced growth: Tourism development must respect Greenland’s nature, culture, and communities. Growth should be responsible and sustainable.

The plan highlights tourism’s role in improving Greenland’s healthcare, building new housing, and increasing job opportunities. These efforts aim to raise the quality of life for Greenlanders overall.

Anette Lings, Chair of the Board for Visit Greenland, said: “Greenland is attracting more international attention, with new airports and rising traveler interest. This creates great opportunities but also important responsibilities. Our strategy focuses on managing growth wisely to benefit both residents and visitors.”

The Greenlandic government, known as the Naalakkersuisut, has set five specific goals for tourism by 2035:

  • Tourism should make up 40% of Greenland’s total export value.
  • The number of tourists should double within ten years, with higher spending per visitor.
  • The tourism sector should employ over 2,000 people.
  • Seventy-five percent of tourism activities should operate year-round, not just seasonally.
  • All tourism operators must have sustainability policies in place.

This plan reflects Greenland’s commitment to developing tourism in a way that supports both its people and its environment.
