Delta Air Lines has introduced new names for its fare classes and updated its booking system in a move to simplify the process for travelers.
The airline has not changed the seat products themselves, but it has given them more consistent and straightforward names. The new fare categories are now called Delta Main (formerly Main Cabin), Delta Comfort (formerly Comfort+), Delta First (formerly First Class), Delta Premium Select, and Delta One.
Delta Premium Select and Delta One, which refer to the airline’s long-haul premium economy and international business class seats, will keep their original names.
Under the Delta Main category, there are now three separate fare tiers. These include:
- Delta Main Basic (formerly Basic Economy), which is the most restricted option.
- Delta Main Classic, which includes benefits such as earning Medallion Qualification Dollars (MQDs), receiving e-credits for cancellations, same-day standby access, and the ability to select a seat.
- Delta Main Extra, which provides higher boarding group status, full refunds to the original form of payment, same-day standby, seat selection, and enhanced mileage earning at a rate of seven miles per dollar.
Similar “Classic” and “Extra” tiers will also be offered across other fare classes, giving travelers more flexibility and control when booking flights.
All of the updated fare options are now available through a redesigned booking interface on Delta’s website and mobile app. The new layout allows customers to easily compare products and see the full range of benefits offered with each fare.
Eric Phillips, Senior Vice President and Chief Digital Officer at Delta, said the changes are based on customer feedback. “As we listen and learn about what our customers want when it comes to their travel, we know that clarity and choice are paramount,” he said. “Our reimagined shopping experience gives customers more options and flexibility to pick the travel experience that works best for them, and a full picture of all the benefits of flying with Delta.”
The new fare names and booking experience took effect on May 15 for travel that originates in the United States and Canada from October 1 onwards.
