TAP Air Portugal is making it easier for American travelers to visit Portugal with the launch of three new nonstop routes from the U.S. The expansion includes flights from Boston, Los Angeles, and San Francisco, strengthening connections between North America and Portugal.
New Route Details
- Boston to Porto – Service began May 15, operating four times weekly (Mondays, Wednesdays, Saturdays, Sundays) on Airbus A321-LR aircraft.
- Los Angeles to Lisbon – Starts May 16, flying three times weekly (Tuesdays, Fridays, Sundays) on Airbus A330-900neo jets, with a fourth weekly flight (Saturdays) added after May 25.
- San Francisco to Terceira (Azores) – Begins June 3, with weekly Tuesday flights on Airbus A330-900neo planes.
The Los Angeles route is particularly significant, marking TAP’s 11th North American gateway.
Strengthening U.S.-Portugal Ties
Doug Webster, Chief Operations and Maintenance Officer at Los Angeles World Airports, called the LAX-Lisbon route a “milestone,” enhancing economic and cultural links between the regions.
TAP is the only airline offering nonstop flights between Portugal and these three U.S. cities. Last year, the carrier transported a record 1.59 million passengers on North American routes—an 8.9% increase from 2023. These routes now account for 10% of TAP’s global passenger traffic.
Rapid Growth in North America
North America remains TAP’s fastest-growing market. In 2024, the airline surpassed 1.5 million passengers on U.S. and Canadian routes for the first time, outpacing global growth.
Carlos Antunes, TAP’s Director for the Americas, said, “We’re thrilled to welcome more North American travelers with these new routes.”
With the expansion, TAP now operates over 100 weekly flights between North America and Portugal, reinforcing its role as a key transatlantic carrier.
