The UK Department for Transport (DfT) has announced a new agreement to support sustainable travel across Europe.
The agreement, called a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU), was signed by the UK transport secretary, Heidi Alexander, and Swiss federal councillor, Albert Rösti. The DfT said this deal will help both governments work together more closely.
After the signing, a joint working group will be formed. This group will include experts from the governments and industries of both countries. Their job will be to find ways to overcome the challenges of starting a direct rail service between the UK and Switzerland.
The group will look at important issues such as safety rules for the Channel Tunnel, new security measures, and discussions with train operators.
The working group will meet for the first time in the next few months. They will create a clear plan to address operational, regulatory, policy, and business needs.
Heidi Alexander, the UK transport secretary, said: “This is an exciting step in improving international rail connections and encouraging greener travel to Europe.
“A direct rail link between the UK and Switzerland could increase tourism, help our economy grow, and bring people closer together. It will also offer passengers a greener travel option.
“This agreement fits with our Plan for Change, which aims to remove international barriers and make bold, long-term choices to better connect Britain and support our economy.”
