WTTC Calls for Greater Use of Sustainable Aviation Fuel in Travel Industry

by Alice

The World Travel & Tourism Council (WTTC) has released a new report urging the travel industry to boost production and use of Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) and other renewable energy sources. The report is titled “Scaling Up Sustainable Fuel.”

Created in partnership with global consultancy ICF, the report outlines how every business in the travel sector can reduce emissions. It provides guidance for companies acting as collaborators, promoters, adopters, or investors in sustainable fuel.

Currently, SAF makes up only 0.3 percent of all jet fuel used worldwide. Global production stands at 1.25 billion liters. However, to meet net-zero carbon goals by 2050, production needs to rise sharply to more than 450 billion liters. This increase will require building around 6,500 new renewable fuel plants worldwide.

Despite the benefits, there are challenges to expanding SAF use. High production costs, limited infrastructure, and competition pose significant barriers.

The report encourages companies to raise awareness by joining campaigns, invest in production facilities, buy sustainable fuel certificates, or supply waste materials for SAF production. For example, The Erawan Group in Asia donates used hotel cooking oil to be recycled into SAF.

Julia Simpson, WTTC President and CEO, said, “Sustainable fuel is the single biggest game-changer for Travel & Tourism. But right now, supply is far below demand. If we don’t act together, we risk higher costs, fuel shortages, and slowed progress on climate goals.”

She added, “Every hotel, tour operator, travel agency, cruise line, and airline has a part to play. This report provides a clear roadmap. Sustainable fuel is not just an environmental need; it is a business priority. Governments should support SAF production with incentives, not just set targets.”
