Austrian national rail operator ÖBB has announced plans to upgrade its current fleet of high-speed Railjet trains. The goal is to bring older trains in line with the standards of its new-generation Railjet, which entered service in 2024.
The upgrade project includes replacing all seats in both first and second class. Business class seats will be renewed rather than replaced. Carriage interiors will also be modernized to match the design of the newest Railjet trains. This includes adding full-length seatbacks to improve passenger privacy.
Other improvements will include new floor coverings, a better passenger information system, and vending machines offering drinks and snacks.
The first of the upgraded Railjet trains will enter service this December. It will run on the new Koralm Railway, a high-speed route that will cut travel time between Graz and Klagenfurt from three hours to just 45 minutes. ÖBB says the new line will also improve international rail connections to Hungary and Italy.
All 60 Railjet trains currently in service—including those operating routes to Germany, Switzerland, Slovakia, and the Czech Republic—are expected to be upgraded by 2031.
