Allianz Partners Travel Index Highlights Hong Kong’s Shifting Travel Concerns and Spending Habits

by Alice

Allianz Partners, a global leader in insurance and assistance services, has unveiled its inaugural Allianz Partners Travel Index 2025, offering key insights into the evolving travel trends and concerns. Conducted in collaboration with Kantar Consumer Link, the survey of 500 Hong Kong respondents provides a snapshot of how Hong Kong travelers are adapting to the changing travel landscape.

Travel Enthusiasm Remains Strong Amid Financial Strain

Despite rising financial pressures, travel remains a priority for Hong Kong residents. According to the survey, 78% of Hong Kong travelers, in line with 81% of respondents across the Asia-Pacific region, cited financial constraints as a primary factor limiting their travel plans. However, 90% of Hong Kong respondents still plan to travel in 2025, indicating that the desire for rest, relaxation, and cultural experiences remains strong. Retail therapy, in particular, has become a significant aspect of travel for Hong Kong residents, even outpacing similar trends in other regions.

Increased Focus on Safety and Risk Management

Hong Kong travelers are placing greater emphasis on personal safety and risk management compared to many other travelers in the Asia-Pacific region. While concerns about illness persist, new worries have emerged. The survey reveals that 53% of Hong Kong respondents now worry about personal safety, while 52% express concerns about extreme weather. Additionally, 43% are anxious about losing travel documents, well above the regional average of 31%. As a result, 90% of travelers in Hong Kong recognize the importance of purchasing travel insurance, seeing it as essential for peace of mind and protection against unexpected events.

Social Media’s Growing Influence on Travel Plans

Social media plays an increasingly pivotal role in how Hong Kong travelers plan their trips and assess risks. Half of the respondents rely on social media for travel advice, a figure that surpasses other countries. YouTube stands out as the most trusted platform, with 77% of respondents using it for travel recommendations. However, a gap remains in how travelers use digital tools for practical purposes. Only 35% of Hong Kong respondents use apps for travel alerts or safety advice, below the regional average of 38%. This highlights the need for improved resources that bridge the gap between travel inspiration and practical preparation.

Shorter, More Frequent Trips and Family Travel on the Rise

Hong Kong travelers are opting for shorter, more frequent getaways, with the average trip lasting between 5 and 8 days and costing around US$1,780—slightly higher than neighboring countries. Intra-Asia travel is the preferred choice for 50% of respondents, with most planning their trips within three months. This trend reflects a shift towards spontaneous travel, with 46% of travelers concerned about flight delays and 40% anticipating potential luggage issues.

Family travel continues to gain momentum, with 51% of respondents traveling with partners or spouses and 29% traveling with children, compared to just 9% who travel solo. This pattern mirrors broader trends seen across the Asia-Pacific region.
