United Airlines is set to introduce Starlink-powered Wi-Fi service on its flights starting Thursday, May 15. This marks a major upgrade for in-flight connectivity, promising faster and more reliable internet for passengers.
The new satellite internet service will first be available on United’s United Express regional aircraft. In the future, the airline plans to expand the service to its long-haul flights. United joins a growing list of international airlines adopting Starlink, including Qatar Airways, Hawaiian Airlines, airBaltic, and Air France.
According to The Independent, United believes Starlink will provide an “incredible onboard experience” for passengers, offering speeds up to 250 megabits per second (Mbps). This will allow travelers to stream movies and TV shows on multiple devices without significant lag or buffering.
United also pointed out that Starlink’s “laser link” technology will keep strong connections between satellites and ground stations, even during poor weather conditions. Currently, traditional in-flight Wi-Fi is often unreliable, especially when flying over remote areas or oceans, where connections are lost.
Cost is another factor. For example, American Airlines charges about $10 for Wi-Fi on a single flight, with subscription plans reaching up to $60 per month.
United aims to equip its entire two-cabin regional fleet with Starlink by the end of 2025.
Grant Milstead, United’s Vice President of Digital Technology, said, “Our ability to roll out this innovative service quickly and at scale is a direct result of the advanced technology and experts at United.” He added, “Starlink has been a fantastic partner, and together, we aim to install Starlink on over 300 regional aircraft by the end of this year.”
The new Wi-Fi will be free for MileagePlus loyalty program members. However, passengers who aren’t signed up for the program won’t have access to the Wi-Fi, as older systems will be removed during the Starlink installation process.
“This gate-to-gate connectivity will offer experiences in the sky at scale that no other major U.S. airline provides, on both seatback screens and personal devices,” the airline said.
In addition to fast browsing, Starlink will also support streaming, online shopping, gaming, and other digital entertainment options.
