G Adventures Unveils New Expedition Ship for Polar Exploration

by Alice

G Adventures has launched a new expedition ship for the 2025 Antarctica season, replacing the beloved Expedition vessel. The new ship, named Ocean Adventurer, will carry 128 passengers and offer an enhanced onboard experience.

The Ocean Adventurer has been chartered through Danish maritime company SunStone. It will operate under the Expedition name as a tribute to G Adventures’ iconic “little red ship.” The vessel will embark on its first G Adventures trip to Antarctica in October 2025. The ship has undergone significant renovations, including the installation of new engines, making it more fuel-efficient than its predecessor. This change aligns with G Adventures’ commitment to reducing its environmental footprint and operating more sustainably.

G Adventures founder Bruce Poon Tip expressed his attachment to the Expedition, which has completed over 270 departures and carried more than 30,000 travelers to remote destinations. However, he acknowledged the importance of evolving and improving the company’s operations. “While we all wanted to continue with our little red ship, we knew it wasn’t the best choice for the environment or for our business,” Poon Tip said. “The new ship represents a significant step forward. It allows us to offer a more comfortable, efficient experience for our travelers while helping us reach our climate goals. We estimate a 30% reduction in carbon emissions per person per day.”

The new ship’s design includes a restaurant, bar, a 170sqm presentation lounge, a library, a fitness area, an observation deck, sun deck, and outdoor jacuzzis. With 70 cabins, the ship offers some of G Adventures’ most modern and stylish accommodations, each featuring either an ocean-facing porthole or window, and ensuite bathrooms. The suites include double beds and larger sea-view windows, allowing passengers to enjoy Antarctica’s stunning views from their rooms.

The ship also maintains the charm of small-ship exploration. It has 11 zodiacs, allowing for two daily excursions and giving every traveler the chance to disembark at each stop. Additionally, 14 expedition experts will be on board, specializing in fields such as marine biology and ornithology. The passenger-to-expert ratio of 10:1 ensures personalized attention, and daily lectures will continue, along with popular kayaking and camping excursions where travelers can paddle through icebergs and camp under the Antarctic stars.

The new vessel is built with Ice Class 1A for enhanced safety and maneuverability. It also features a refurbished propulsion system and updated stabilizers, which provide a smoother ride and help reduce motion sickness during rough crossings.

Ben Perlo, G Adventures CEO, noted that demand for polar travel remains strong. “Travelers are increasingly drawn to our small-ship expeditions and the immersive experiences we offer in this unique part of the world. We’re excited to continue offering incredible experiences and value as we enter this new chapter,” he said.

The new Expedition ship will offer five Antarctica itineraries, including:

  • Antarctica Classic – 11 days, starting at $12,599 per person
  • Spirit of Shackleton – 21 days, starting at $27,799 per person
  • Falklands, South Georgia, and Antarctica – 22 days, starting at $22,299 per person
