Heavy rain and strong winds caused significant disruptions to travel on Jeju Island on Friday. The weather conditions were linked to a low-pressure system that moved in from the East China Sea.
The Jeju Meteorological Administration issued heavy rain warnings for the island’s mountainous and southern areas. Wind warnings were also in place for higher elevations.
By 8 a.m., rainfall levels were recorded as follows: 80.5 millimeters (3.16 inches) at Azalea Field on Mount Halla, 64 millimeters at the mountain’s southern wall, 56 millimeters in Yeongsil and Pyoseon, 19.5 millimeters in Gujwa, 13.9 millimeters in Seogwipo, and 3.5 millimeters in Jeju City.
Peak wind gusts reached up to 33.2 meters per second (74.2 mph) at Samgakbong Peak on Mount Halla, 23.5 meters in Sajaebi, 21.3 meters in Gosan, and 20.1 meters in Nakseon.
Due to worsening weather, 19 domestic flights—10 arrivals and 9 departures—were canceled at Jeju International Airport by 8 a.m., as reported by Korea Airports Corporation. Ferry services were also affected, with suspensions on the Songlim Blue Ocean route between Jeju and Wando, and the Santa Monica line between Jeju and Jindo.
The Korea Meteorological Administration (KMA) warned of continued thunderstorms, lightning, and strong winds as the low-pressure system, which originated near Shanghai, advanced toward the island.
Rainfall is expected to reach 20 to 60 millimeters in northern Jeju and Chuja Island, 50 to 100 millimeters in the eastern and western parts of the island, over 150 millimeters in the southern and mid-mountain areas, and more than 200 millimeters in the mountains.
A KMA official urged the public to avoid outdoor activities, such as hiking on Mount Halla or walking the Olle trails, and to take necessary precautions for traffic and facility safety amid the severe weather.
