Hungary has reached a major tourism milestone this year by welcoming its five millionth tourist, according to the Hungarian Tourism Board, as reported by Xinhua News Agency.
Data from the National Tourism Data Supply Center (NTAK) shows that 2.4 million domestic tourists and 2.6 million international visitors stayed in Hungarian hotels so far this year. This marks an 18% increase compared to the same period last year.
NTAK said the sharp rise was driven by strong demand during the Easter holidays, school vacations, and the long weekend in early May. Warm and pleasant weather also helped boost travel numbers.
Domestic tourism grew by 6% year-on-year. Many local travelers chose to visit the Matera-Buk region, the Budapest area, Debrecen, Tokaj, and Nyíregyháza. More than half of all tourists stayed in hotels. Among them, four-star hotels were especially popular, making up 56% of bookings.
International visitors mainly came from Germany, Romania, Italy, the United Kingdom, and Austria. Budapest saw a 20% increase in foreign tourist numbers. Visitors from Italy, the UK, Germany, Spain, and Israel made up a large share. Outside the capital, Sarvar and Hévíz, known for their thermal spas, were also key attractions.
Tourism officials said Hungary is well on its way to meeting its goal of attracting 20 million tourists annually by 2030—if current trends continue.
