As millions of people plan to visit the Philippines in the summer of 2025, the U.S. government has issued updated travel advisories to ensure travelers’ safety.
On May 8, 2025, the U.S. Department of State reissued its Level 2: Exercise Increased Caution advisory, citing civil unrest in certain areas of the Philippines. The advisory specifically urges travelers to avoid:
- The Sulu Archipelago, including the southern Sulu Sea
- Marawi City in Mindanao
The State Department also advises reconsidering travel to other areas of Mindanao this year due to ongoing security concerns. As a precaution, U.S. government employees working in the Philippines must obtain special permission to visit these areas.
Travelers planning to visit the Philippines in 2025 are encouraged to enroll in the Smart Traveler Enrollment Program (STEP). This service offers emergency alerts and helps U.S. citizens locate assistance if needed.
Meanwhile, the U.S. Embassy in Manila has launched a reminder for passport renewals under the slogan “Beat the Summer Rush – Renew Your Passport Today.” With summer approaching, demand for consular services is expected to increase. The embassy advises applicants to schedule their appointments now to avoid delays, as routine consular services are currently available with minimal wait times.
In terms of health risks, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has issued two health advisories for the Philippines in 2025.
- Dengue Fever: The CDC issued a dengue advisory in April, urging travelers to take necessary precautions.
- Measles: A global measles advisory was issued in March, advising travelers to ensure they are up-to-date on their vaccinations.
While the U.S. does not offer a dengue vaccine, MMR (measles, mumps, rubella) vaccines are widely available at travel clinics and pharmacies.
The CDC also recommends travelers check their routine vaccines and consult with a healthcare provider at least a month before traveling to the Philippines. This is to ensure they are fully prepared for any health risks during their trip.
