Travel + Leisure Co. has acquired Castaways Resort & Spa Mission Beach, which will now be known as Club Wyndham Mission Beach. This addition will become part of the Club Wyndham South Pacific portfolio.
Located along a pristine 14-kilometre beach, Mission Beach is a picturesque town nestled between the popular Queensland cities of Cairns and Townsville. The area is known for its stunning snorkelling opportunities near Dunk Island, just a 10-minute water taxi ride away. The Great Barrier Reef, a UNESCO World Heritage site, lies just 40 kilometres offshore, making Mission Beach the closest access point to this famous natural wonder. Tours from the town offer an exclusive experience, rarely encountering other vessels.
Barry Robinson, president and managing director of International Operations at Travel + Leisure Co., highlighted the appeal of Mission Beach. “It’s a tropical North Queensland gem, perfect for travelers who want to relax or explore Australia’s incredible natural beauty. It also serves as a great stop for our club owners on road trips between Airlie Beach and Cairns,” Robinson said.
With an impressive average occupancy rate of nearly 90%, Robinson added, “We are excited to introduce Mission Beach and its surrounding attractions to our Club Wyndham South Pacific owners and their guests.”
The region offers a wealth of experiences for travelers, including the UNESCO World Heritage-listed Wet Tropics, which spans almost 9,000 square kilometres. This reserve is home to some of Australia’s most diverse wildlife and plant species, many of which are threatened. For adventure seekers, the area offers activities such as mountain biking along the Musgrave Trail in Djiru National Park, white-water rafting in the Tully River, and skydiving over the coast.
Club Wyndham Mission Beach will be the 67th property in the Club Wyndham South Pacific portfolio, and the 36th in Australia, catering to the nearly 60,000 owners in the region’s leading vacation ownership club.
The resort sits directly on the beachfront and features 48 studio, one-bedroom, two-bedroom, and loft-style apartments. Guests can enjoy two swimming pools with ocean views, a restaurant and bar with ample dining space, and the Drift day spa. The resort has long been a popular choice for locals hosting weddings, thanks to its stunning beachfront location, experienced staff, and delicious cuisine.
In the coming months, the resort will begin a phased refurbishment, which will include updates to some apartments and common areas. Despite these upgrades, the resort will remain open throughout the process.
This acquisition, brokered by ResortBrokers, signals confidence in Mission Beach’s future as a key tourist destination. The Queensland Government, Cassowary Coast Regional Council, and Australian Government are currently investing nearly $19 million in the Mission Beach Town Centre Revitalisation Project. This effort aims to enhance the town’s infrastructure, including the Village Green.
Travel + Leisure Co. manages about 100 properties in the Asia Pacific region, 56 of which are in Australia. The company operates three shared ownership vacation clubs—Club Wyndham South Pacific, Club Wyndham Asia, and Accor Vacation Club—serving over 100,000 members.
