Bhutan is setting a new precedent in global tourism by launching the first national-level cryptocurrency payment system for travelers. The initiative, which partners with Binance Pay and Bhutan’s fully digital DK Bank, allows tourists to make cashless payments using cryptocurrencies. With more than 100 local merchants already onboard, the system offers visitors a seamless and secure way to complete transactions throughout their stay.
The new crypto payment system enables Binance Pay users to pay for a wide range of travel-related expenses, including flight tickets, tourist visas, hotel bookings, and local purchases. Payments are processed quickly and securely through both static and dynamic QR codes, making it easy for tourists to navigate their journey without needing physical cash.
Bhutan, known as the “Kingdom of Happiness,” has long focused on Gross National Happiness (GNH) rather than GDP, emphasizing sustainability, cultural preservation, and social well-being. This new partnership with Binance Pay and DK Bank aligns with that vision, bringing digital innovation to tourism while supporting local communities and blending traditional values with modern technology.
Key Features of the Initiative:
Seamless Experience: Travelers can use cryptocurrency for nearly all aspects of their trip, from flights and visas to local shopping.
Integrated System: The system connects immigration services, travel agents, hotels, guides, and retail outlets for a smooth, unified process.
Inclusive Reach: Even small vendors in remote areas can now accept payments through QR codes, increasing accessibility for tourists.
Supported by DK Bank: Bhutan’s first fully digital bank powers the system.
Lower Transaction Fees: The crypto system offers lower fees compared to traditional payment methods, with zero gas fees.
Instant Transactions: Payments are processed immediately, ensuring fast and efficient transactions for travelers.
Wide Cryptocurrency Support: The system supports over 100 cryptocurrencies, including BNB, BTC, and USDC.
Secure Transactions: All payments are encrypted, with two-factor authentication (2FA) and real-time confirmations via the Binance app for added security.
Richard Teng, CEO of Binance, expressed excitement about the collaboration: “We are thrilled to partner with Bhutan to push the use of cryptocurrencies in travel. This initiative not only advances digital payments but also highlights how technology can bring cultures and economies together, enhancing global connectivity.”
Damcho Rinzin, Director of Bhutan’s Department of Tourism, emphasized the broader impact of the initiative: “This is more than just a payment solution — it’s a step toward inclusion, innovation, and greater convenience for tourists. It empowers small vendors in even the most remote villages to engage in the tourism economy.”
This project marks the first time a nation has implemented a national tourism payment system based on cryptocurrency. It helps overcome common obstacles such as high transaction fees and limited merchant acceptance by offering low-cost payments and prompt settlements. Real-time notifications ensure transparency for both tourists and merchants, further enhancing the overall experience.
