American Airlines is set to improve its boarding process with a new system that will be rolled out in May. This update aims to create a smoother, more organized experience for passengers, with a special focus on premium cabin travelers. The new process follows a 2024 update aimed at preventing passengers from boarding out of turn and ensuring better organization.
Pre-Boarding for Premium Passengers
Starting May 1, American Airlines will introduce a pre-boarding phase for its business and first-class passengers. This will allow them to board the plane before the general boarding process, providing a more relaxed and efficient start to their journey. Families traveling with children under two years old will also continue to enjoy pre-boarding privileges. The airline plans to improve communication regarding this process to ensure families know what to expect.
ConciergeKey members and passengers needing special assistance, like wheelchair services, will also have access to pre-boarding. This change will make the boarding process easier for passengers with accessibility needs.
Priority Boarding for Loyalty Members
After the pre-boarding phase, American Airlines will implement a nine-group boarding system based on AAdvantage loyalty status. Groups one through four will be reserved for higher-tier AAdvantage members, including Executive Platinum, Platinum Pro, and Platinum cardholders. These passengers will enjoy expedited boarding to settle into their seats faster.
Group five will mark the start of boarding for the Main Cabin, including lower-tier frequent flyers and AAdvantage credit card holders with at least 15,000 loyalty points. This tiered system helps reduce congestion at the gate and gives priority to loyal customers.
For passengers with Basic Economy tickets, the boarding process will occur later in the sequence, after all other groups have boarded. This policy ensures that passengers with higher fares or loyalty status have priority access to overhead bin space.
Extra Time to Board for More Efficiency
As part of its efforts to improve boarding, American Airlines is also increasing the boarding window by five minutes. Starting in May, boarding will begin five minutes earlier for certain flights. For Airbus A319 and A320 aircraft, boarding will begin 35 minutes before departure, up from 30 minutes. For longer flights on Boeing 737-800, MAX8, A321, and A321neo aircraft, boarding will begin 40 minutes before departure. Long-haul flights on wide-body aircraft like the Boeing 777-200ER, 777-300ER, and 787-9 Dreamliner will maintain the 40-minute boarding time.
These changes are intended to reduce the stress of rushing at the gate and give passengers more time to settle into their seats.
