Marriott International has announced plans to acquire the Netherlands-based hotel chain CitizenM in a deal worth $355 million.
Founded in 2008, CitizenM operates 36 hotels across Europe, the United States, and Asia, known for their “technology-driven” services. The company also has three properties under construction, set to open by mid-2026.
Anthony Capuano, President and CEO of Marriott International, expressed excitement about the acquisition, saying, “We are thrilled to add CitizenM to our select-service brand portfolio. This deal will strengthen Marriott’s presence in a valuable market segment globally.”
CitizenM’s hotels are located in major cities such as Amsterdam, Copenhagen, Dublin, Geneva, Glasgow, London, Paris, Rome, Rotterdam, and Zurich, as well as key U.S. cities including New York, Boston, Chicago, Los Angeles, Miami, Seattle, and Washington D.C.
Rattan Chadha, Founder and Chairman of CitizenM, also welcomed the deal, stating, “We are very excited about our agreement with Marriott. This partnership will significantly boost CitizenM’s global presence. Marriott shares our values, and I am confident they will preserve our brand’s unique identity moving forward.”
This acquisition is part of a wider trend in the hospitality industry, where major hotel chains have been acquiring independent brands. Notably, IHG purchased Ruby Hotels earlier this year, while Hyatt acquired Standard International in 2024.
Upon completion of the deal, Marriott will add 8,544 rooms to its global portfolio. CitizenM’s owners could also receive up to $110 million based on the brand’s future growth over a multi-year period.
Lennert de Jong, CEO of CitizenM, said, “With Marriott’s development power, we look forward to expanding CitizenM into new destinations worldwide. We will continue to own and operate our hotels, and this partnership will help us maximize returns.”
Marriott expects to finalize the transaction in 2025, subject to customary conditions, including U.S. regulatory approval. The acquisition will help Marriott increase its global hotel inventory by about 5 percent this year.
