Air Canada is known for proudly representing Canada on the global stage. As the official airline of all seven Canadian NHL teams, the Toronto Raptors, and the Canadian Olympic and Paralympic Committees, the airline also celebrates the passion of Canadian sports fans through various programs. One of the most heartwarming initiatives is the Air Canada Fan Flight, which began in 2015. This program rewards deserving young sports fans with unforgettable trips to support their favorite teams at away games.
The 2024-25 season of the Fan Flight program has once again brought incredible experiences to young hockey fans. This year, Air Canada partnered with the Air Canada Foundation to recognize children and youth who have made a positive impact in their communities. These young individuals were nominated by the Foundation, a charity dedicated to helping children and youth who face adversity.
The recipients of the Fan Flight awards are a true reflection of the program’s values: resilience, passion, and community spirit. In addition to tickets to attend live hockey games, the lucky winners and their families receive complimentary airfare and accommodation. The experience goes beyond the game itself, including special surprises like a memorable airport send-off, the chance to watch morning practice with the team, and even a meet-and-greet with the team’s head coach.
The Fan Flight program does more than just celebrate sports. It fosters a sense of community and social connection, inspiring young people to pursue their dreams. Daytin, a participant from this year’s program, shared how the experience had a lasting impact on him. “As a big brother, I know it’s important to be a good role model for my little sisters,” he said. “At HEROS, I try to be a good example to younger players—on and off the ice.”
HEROS, a charity that teaches life skills to marginalized youth through hockey, partners with Air Canada to make the Fan Flight program possible. Every year, the initiative brings young players from HEROS and other community programs to NHL games, offering them a chance to connect with their favorite players and teams.
Rebecca Smillie-Nedelec, Director of Community Engagement at Air Canada, emphasized the program’s impact. “Fan Flight is about creating moments that remind these children they matter and that their dreams are within reach. It’s not just about watching a game—it’s about feeling supported and celebrated.”
The success of the Fan Flight program is made possible through collaboration with the Air Canada Foundation, the National Hockey League, and many dedicated partners, including HEROS and the Shine Foundation. Kevin Hodgson, Executive Director of HEROS, explained the program’s importance for the youth involved: “Our HEROS players face many challenges, but they show incredible resilience. Experiencing these trips gives them hope and encouragement to continue growing.”
Through initiatives like the Air Canada Fan Flight, the Air Canada Foundation continues to empower children and youth, helping them overcome barriers and realize their full potential.
