China is anticipating a significant increase in cross-border travel during the upcoming five-day May Day holiday, with daily border crossings expected to average 2.15 million. This marks a 27% rise compared to last year, according to the National Immigration Administration (NIA) on Monday.
The busiest days for cross-border travel are expected to be between May 1 and May 5.
Traffic at major international airports in China is also expected to increase steadily. Shanghai Pudong is forecasted to handle the highest volume, with 101,000 daily crossings. It will be followed by Guangzhou Baiyun with 50,000 and Beijing Capital with 45,000, the NIA said.
With the continued rise in travel between Hong Kong, Macao, and the Chinese mainland, the May Day holiday is set to see even higher traffic levels. This surge will be further fueled by several major events scheduled across the regions.
The NIA has advised border authorities to closely monitor cross-border traffic, providing timely updates to assist travelers. The agency also emphasized the importance of ensuring sufficient security staff is in place to keep wait times at border crossings under 30 minutes.
