The European Union has approved new travel regulations that will lead to significant delays for UK tourists traveling to popular destinations such as France, Spain, Greece, Italy, and Portugal. These changes, starting in October, will require UK citizens to provide biometric data, including photos and fingerprints, as part of a new entry process.
As part of the updated procedures, UK travelers will have to scan their passports and submit biometric information. To manage the expected increase in passenger volume, airlines have been advised to keep passengers on board their flights to prevent overcrowding at airports while they complete these checks.
Additionally, drivers using the Channel Tunnel are being warned about longer waiting times. Large processing centers are being set up in Dover and London St Pancras to handle the surge in travelers.
The new Entry-Exit System (EES) aims to improve security by tracking individuals entering and leaving the EU. Although the system has faced several delays, the EU has now approved its rollout. The new regulations will be enforced starting in October, with a six-month period for EU countries to implement the system.
For UK passport holders, the first time they travel to Europe under the new rules, they will need to scan their passports and provide their fingerprints and a photo. This process will need to be repeated every three years or when they renew their passports.
For travelers using the Channel Tunnel or ferries, these checks will be completed in the UK. However, those flying to Europe will go through the checks upon arrival.
Drivers heading to Europe will be required to exit their vehicles to submit the necessary information. In 2026, the European Travel Information and Authorisation System (Etias) will also be introduced, requiring travelers to obtain a visa waiver to enter Europe. The waiver will cost approximately £6 and will be valid for three years.
