Soaring Summer Fares: European Trips See Massive Price Hike

by Alice

As summer temperatures in Europe rise, so do airline fares. Travelers from Hyderabad to popular European destinations are facing fare increases of up to 300% during the peak holiday season. Even the most affordable routes, including both long-haul and stopover flights, are seeing significant price hikes.

European countries such as Switzerland, Italy, France, Greece, and Germany have become top choices for travelers this summer, thanks to their pleasant temperatures, ranging from 10°C to 18°C. These conditions are perfect for outdoor activities and sightseeing, making the region an attractive option for tourists.

The surge in demand has driven airfares to record highs. For example, a flight from Hyderabad to Rome in early May with three layovers jumped from Rs 24,000 to Rs 60,000. Flights with a single stopover in cities like New Delhi, Abu Dhabi, Doha, Dubai, or London now cost between Rs 1 lakh and Rs 1.5 lakh, compared to the previous price of Rs 60,000. Fares from Hyderabad to Zurich in Switzerland have risen even more, now ranging from Rs 86,000 to Rs 1.3 lakh for one-stop flights. For longer routes with multiple layovers—sometimes lasting up to 36 hours—the fares range from Rs 60,000 to Rs 75,000, nearly three times their usual cost.

Travel agents have reported a significant rise in bookings for European holidays since March. The ongoing uncertainty surrounding tourism in Kashmir has led many travelers to consider destinations in Europe instead. However, travelers should be aware that obtaining a tourist visa for countries like Switzerland and Italy typically takes around 15 days to process.

“European holiday packages are in high demand this year, with prices ranging from Rs 2 lakh to Rs 5 lakh per person for trips lasting 10 to 15 days,” said Moez Meghani, owner of Max Travels. “Bookings are being made two to three months in advance, with many planning trips well into June.”

Domestic Tourists Shift to Himachal Pradesh

Meanwhile, domestic travelers are adjusting their plans due to the ongoing tensions in Kashmir. Several popular destinations, including Kullu, Manali, Shimla, Solan, Sirmaur, and Mandi in Himachal Pradesh, have become alternative choices for holidaymakers.

“I had planned a trip to Kashmir with five friends, but because of the unrest, we decided to visit Himachal instead,” said N Kamal, an IT professional from Begumpet. “Although airfares to Shimla and Kullu were high—between Rs 17,000 and Rs 23,000 one way—we opted to travel by train to Delhi and booked a Himachal tour package for Rs 15,000 per person for three nights.”

Following the recent terror attack on tourists in Kashmir, travel agents say many are now choosing hill stations like Himachal Pradesh and Darjeeling for their vacations. “With sky-high airfares in May, tourists are increasingly opting for June packages,” said Mohammed Abdul Moiz, treasurer of the Tour Operators Association of Telangana. “Singapore and Malaysia are also seeing a rise in demand for international trips, with packages starting at Rs 39,000.”
