As the May Day holiday approaches, a leading Chinese online travel platform is advising tourists to consider off-peak travel to enjoy significantly lower prices. Currently, bookings for both domestic and international flights have surged.
Recent policies, including instant tax refunds for foreign visitors, have boosted China’s inbound tourism market, making it more attractive to international travelers.
Data from online travel platforms reveal that bookings for inbound tourism during this year’s May Day holiday have increased by 173% compared to last year. South Korea, Japan, and Singapore have emerged as the main countries sending tourists to China.
Meanwhile, some medium- and short-distance destinations for Chinese tourists have also gained popularity during the holiday period.
Fliggy, a leading domestic travel platform, reported that as of Thursday, over 1.03 million tickets for inbound and outbound travel during the May Day holiday have been sold, marking a 25% increase compared to last year.
“Traveling in the off-season before the holiday can offer better value,” said Liu Ting, a researcher at the Qunar.com Big Data Research Institute. “For example, a round-trip ticket from Beijing to Kuala Lumpur from May 1 to 5 costs over 7,400 yuan (around 1,015 USD), but from April 29 to May 3, the same ticket costs only half that price. Similarly, a round-trip ticket from Beijing to Hangzhou during the holiday costs nearly 3,000 yuan (around 412 USD), while tickets from April 29 to May 3 are under 1,000 yuan (around 137 USD), a savings of more than 60%.”
By traveling before the peak holiday period, tourists can take advantage of these significant price reductions.
