Irish Citizens Urged to Carry European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) When Travelling in Europe

by Alice

As many prepare for summer holidays abroad, Irish citizens are being reminded of an essential item to pack: the European Health Insurance Card (EHIC). This card provides access to public healthcare services in EU and EEA countries, as well as in Switzerland, at little or no cost.

While no one plans to get sick or injured while on holiday, accidents can happen. Without the right health coverage, facing an emergency in a foreign country can be stressful and costly. The EHIC, formerly known as the E111 form, can help alleviate some of these worries by ensuring access to emergency healthcare when traveling within the European Union (EU) and European Economic Area (EEA).

Which Countries are Covered by the EHIC?

The EHIC is valid in all EU countries, as well as Iceland, Norway, and Liechtenstein. It also applies in Switzerland. However, it is important to note that Andorra and Monaco are not part of either the EU or the EEA, so the EHIC is not valid there.

Irish citizens visiting the UK will also be covered for healthcare services through the Common Travel Area agreement, which allows Irish citizens to access UK healthcare services.

What Does the EHIC Cover?

The EHIC provides access to public healthcare services at no or reduced cost for temporary stays, up to three months. This includes treatment for pre-existing conditions and routine maternity care (as long as you are not traveling to give birth). It also covers Irish students studying abroad during the academic year.

What the EHIC Does Not Cover

The EHIC does not cover private medical costs, such as private hospital stays or private consultations. It also does not cover the cost of returning to Ireland for medical treatment or the expenses of ongoing treatment that was planned before traveling.

Important Information Before You Travel

Each member of your family must have their own EHIC, which is valid for up to four years. The card is free to apply for or renew, and the process can be done online. Keep in mind that, in some countries, you may need to pay for certain healthcare services depending on local regulations.

If you seek medical treatment while abroad without your EHIC and incur charges, or if you are incorrectly charged, you may be eligible for a refund. In such cases, the Health Service Executive (HSE) can assist in liaising with other countries to resolve the issue.

Make sure to carry your EHIC and enjoy peace of mind while traveling across Europe this summer.
