IGA Istanbul Airport has launched a new system that allows simultaneous operations from all three of its runways. The new “triple runway operations,” introduced last week with three Turkish Airlines flights taking off at the same time, are set to increase the airport’s capacity from 120 to 148 flights per hour.
This expansion in flight operations is expected to bring several benefits, including shorter waiting times for airlines, fewer delays for passengers, and a reduction in carbon emissions, according to the airport’s statement.
In 2024, Istanbul Airport ranked as the second busiest airport in Europe, behind London Heathrow, according to data from Airports Council International (ACI) World. The airport served 80.1 million passengers last year and aims to eventually handle up to 200 million passengers annually.
Mehmet Kalyoncu, a board member at Istanbul Airport, called the achievement both a technical and strategic milestone. He added, “We have made a significant step toward becoming a leading global aviation hub equipped with advanced technologies. This will not only make Istanbul more efficient but will also benefit Europe’s airspace as a whole.”
Turkish Airlines stands to gain significantly from the increased flight capacity. Ahmet Bolat, chairman of the airline’s board, expressed pride in the accomplishment, stating, “We are honored to be part of this historic moment for Turkish aviation. The simultaneous take-off of three of our aircraft marks a first for Europe. This increased operational capacity will improve flight efficiency and pave the way for our continued growth.”
