Trainline has expanded its presence in Spain with the acquisition of Trenes.com, an online platform for booking train and bus tickets.
Founded in 2014 and based in Barcelona, Trenes.com served over 350,000 customers last year. The financial details of the acquisition were not disclosed.
Trainline stated it plans to improve the Trenes.com platform, enhancing the ticketing experience and offering more options for customers.
Pedro Garcia, Trainline’s General Manager for the EU, highlighted Spain’s role in leading the liberalization of European rail. He said this shift is driving growth and offering more service variety for customers.
“Both Trenes.com and Trainline share a mission to make travel more accessible at competitive prices, encouraging more people to choose the sustainable option of rail,” Garcia added.
Pere Sallent Costajussà, co-founder and CEO of Trenes.com, expressed pride in the company’s growth. He said, “I’m excited for the next chapter with Trainline, helping expand the brand and reach more customers for their rail and bus bookings.”
The acquisition is pending approval from Spain’s competition regulator, with both companies expecting the deal to close in the coming weeks.
In another development, Trainline announced Mike Hyde’s promotion to Chief Technology Officer. Hyde, who previously served as Chief Data Officer, will now oversee both the technology and data teams.
The company has also appointed Nina de Souza as Chief Product Officer. She joins Trainline from TBAuctions, a B2B marketplace for used industrial goods.
