Singapore Travelers Prioritize Sustainability and Community Impact, Says Booking.com

by Alice

As sustainability continues to shape global tourism, travelers from Singapore are increasingly focusing on both the environmental and social effects of their trips. According to Booking.com’s 10th annual Sustainable Travel Report, 46% of Singaporeans are now more mindful of the impact travel has on local communities and the environment.

The report, which surveyed over 32,000 travelers across 34 countries, sheds light on the changing attitudes of Singaporeans as they seek more responsible ways to travel. A significant 68% of respondents want their spending to directly support local communities, while 67% aim to leave destinations in a better state than they found them. These statistics reflect a growing awareness of travel’s wider impact, extending beyond just environmental concerns to include social and economic responsibility.

The 2025 report takes a deeper look at how Singaporeans view tourism, not only as travelers but also as residents. While 44% of respondents believe tourism benefits Singapore, there are concerns about overcrowding (38%), rising living costs (34%), and traffic congestion (30%). However, only 22% support limiting the number of tourists. Instead, many prefer long-term investments in infrastructure, such as better waste management (32%) and enhanced public transport (29%).

Interestingly, more than half of Singaporeans feel that visitors generally respect local customs (52%) and support local businesses (54%). This aligns with the values of travelers themselves, with 78% seeking culturally immersive experiences. In response, many are adjusting their travel habits. Over 40% (43%) bring reusable water bottles, 38% avoid peak travel seasons, and 37% make an effort to learn about local cultures when traveling.

Danielle D’Silva, Booking.com’s Director of Sustainability, emphasized the importance of infrastructure and innovation in shaping sustainable travel. “For destinations to remain enjoyable for both residents and visitors, tourism must evolve alongside traveler intentions. We aim to provide practical tools, such as showcasing certified sustainable accommodations and using AI-driven recommendations, to help distribute tourism more evenly,” she said.

With sustainable travel now mainstream, destinations and travel brands across Asia Pacific are being urged to adapt. The growing awareness among Singaporean travelers signals a demand for tourism models that are ethical and inclusive, protecting ecosystems, respecting local cultures, and benefiting the communities that host tourists.

As Booking.com’s report highlights, the future of travel is not just about the destinations people visit, but also about how their presence impacts the places they explore.
