The UK Foreign Office has issued updated travel advice for Britons heading to Spain and Greece, warning of severe heat and the growing risk of wildfires.
Travellers are urged to sign up for emergency alerts as temperatures in southern Europe continue to climb. The extreme weather has already caused serious disruption in some areas, with thousands evacuated from seaside communities near Athens as wildfires threaten homes.
In Greece, temperatures are hovering around 40°C, and forecasts suggest the heat may intensify over the coming days.
“Extreme temperatures are currently affecting many areas of Greece,” the Foreign Office said. “You can register on the Greek government’s Emergency Communication Service to receive emergency alerts.”
Travellers are advised to stay informed by checking updates from the Greek Meteorological Service or other European weather services. They should also confirm conditions with their travel provider and follow all guidance from local authorities.
Officials have also warned that the extreme heat could lead to travel delays or disruptions.
The Foreign Office has also updated its advice for Spain.
“Extreme temperatures are currently affecting many areas of Spain,” the guidance states. “For severe weather warnings and updates, visit the Spanish Meteorological Office (AEMET) or the European Meteorological Services website.”
The advice also points travellers to the NHS website for tips on staying safe in hot weather. Health information is also available from the Spanish Ministry of Health, although the site is in Spanish.
Holidaymakers are reminded to check with their travel provider before departure and to follow instructions from local authorities at all times.
