APT Travel Group has officially christened its first European purpose-built river ship, MS Estrela, in a ceremony held in Porto. The event comes ahead of the naming of its new luxury vessel, APT Solara, set for April 21, 2025, in the Netherlands.
Industry Leader Named Godmother
Lucy Huxley, a prominent UK travel media figure and industry advocate, was honored as the ship’s Godmother during the ceremony. MS Estrela has since departed Porto, beginning its journey up the Douro River to Régua.
The ship will operate two key itineraries:
- A 14-day Douro Delights with Madrid and Lisbon cruise.
- An 11-day Lisbon with Douro Discovery voyage by Travelmarvel.
A Tribute to Passion and Innovation
APT Travel Group CEO David Cox praised Huxley’s dedication to the travel industry, stating: “Lucy has long been a champion of travel, and we couldn’t be prouder to have her as Godmother. Her enthusiasm mirrors the spirit of this ship—designed to connect people and celebrate Portugal’s beauty.”
Huxley called the honor “incredible,” adding: “Standing on the sun deck, champagne in hand, surrounded by the Douro’s stunning scenery and industry friends, was truly emotional. This ship is special, and I’m excited for the memories it will create.”
Expanding Luxury Fleet with Sustainability Focus
APT will further elevate river cruising with the April 21 christening of APT Solara in Rotterdam, followed by its maiden voyage on April 25. A sister ship, APT Ostara, launches in June 2025.
Cox emphasized the ships’ innovative design: “These vessels redefine luxury, tailored for Australian travelers while prioritizing sustainability.”
Key features include:
- Fuel efficiency, energy optimization, and waste reduction.
- A 50-crew-to-154-guest ratio for personalized service.
- Six dining venues, including a wine cellar and alfresco options.
- A sun deck with a heated pool and lounge area.
The new ships aim to set benchmarks in both luxury and eco-friendly cruising.
