A dangerous wildfire is spreading quickly near Bishop, California, burning through dry brush and threatening homes. The fire, named the “Silver Fire,” started Sunday afternoon near Highway 6 and Silver Canyon Road. Strong winds and dry conditions helped the flames grow fast, reaching 1,000 acres by evening.
Firefighters are struggling to control the blaze. Helicopters and planes could not fly Monday morning because of heavy smoke and strong winds. Officials have ordered evacuations in several areas, including parts of Inyo and Mono counties. Highway 6 is closed for 30 miles due to flames and thick smoke.
An evacuation center is open at the Benton Community Center for those forced to leave their homes. The fire is still 0% contained, and crews are working hard to protect buildings and power lines in its path.
This wildfire comes just months after major fires burned across Southern California, destroying thousands of structures. Experts warn that dry weather and high winds are making firefighting difficult.
Authorities will provide updates as the situation changes. Residents should follow evacuation orders and avoid the area for safety.
