The Great Smoky Mountains National Park has shared new details about the ongoing closure of its popular Laurel Falls Trail. The trail, which has been closed since January 6, 2025, will remain shut for about 18 months for major repairs. Park officials are working to improve safety and accessibility for hikers.
The project includes widening the paved trail, building a new viewing platform near the waterfall, and adding more than 50 parking spaces. These changes aim to make the hike safer and more enjoyable for the over 300,000 visitors who use the trail each year.
While the Laurel Falls Trail is closed, the park suggests several other great hikes, such as the Baskins Creek Trail, Little River Trail, and Middle Prong Trail. These alternatives offer beautiful scenery and waterfalls for visitors to enjoy.
In other park news, rangers are reminding guests to avoid using confetti during celebrations. Even small pieces can harm wildlife and the environment. Visitors are encouraged to pack out all trash or use bear-proof bins.
Additionally, with bears becoming more active in spring, the park warns hikers to store food securely. Bears searching for food can be dangerous to both people and themselves. Properly disposing of trash and locking food in cars helps keep everyone safe.
The Great Smoky Mountains National Park continues to balance visitor enjoyment with conservation efforts. While some trails are temporarily closed, there are still plenty of ways to explore this stunning natural treasure.
