Amtrak is making major changes to several of its train services after discovering corrosion issues on passenger cars. More than 70 train cars have been pulled from service for safety inspections, leading to cancellations and bus substitutions on key routes, including the *Cascades* (Vancouver, BC, to Eugene, Oregon) and *Borealis* (St. Paul to Chicago). The railroad says passenger safety is the top priority, but the disruptions will inconvenience many travelers.
The problem stems from corrosion found on critical structural components, including the “jacking pads” used for maintenance. Amtrak removed 61 coach cars and 9 café cars from its Horizon fleet after inspections revealed additional areas of concern. The railroad is working with the manufacturer to assess the damage and determine when the cars can safely return to service.
On the *Cascades* route, nearly all trains have been canceled except for two non-Horizon trains (#503 and #508) running between Seattle and Eugene. Passengers on other trips will be moved to chartered buses, though bike accommodations will still be honored. The *Borealis* service is also affected, with Train #1340 replaced by buses, while Train #1333 remains operational. Amtrak expects full service to resume by March 28.
Other routes facing disruptions include the *Downeaster* (Boston to Maine) and *Hiawatha* (Chicago to Milwaukee), which will operate with fewer cars or bus replacements. Business Class passengers will be downgraded to Coach on replacement buses and receive refunds for the fare difference.
This latest issue adds to Amtrak’s recent challenges, including the resignation of CEO Stephen Gardner and a measles exposure incident on a Northeast Regional train. Travelers are advised to check Amtrak’s website or app for real-time updates before departing. The railroad has not provided a timeline for full service restoration but says inspections and repairs are underway.
