Australia’s digital border initiative has taken another step forward with the expansion of the Australian Travel Declaration (ATD) pilot to all eligible Qantas international passengers arriving at Brisbane Airport. The program replaces traditional paper arrival cards with a streamlined digital process.
Modernizing Border Crossings
The Australian Border Force (ABF) and Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry (DAFF) are partnering with Qantas on the trial. ABF Commissioner Gavan Reynolds called the move crucial for developing a fully digital border system, noting positive passenger feedback about the simpler process.
Preparing for Future Demand
With major events like the 2032 Brisbane Olympics approaching, officials say the technology will help manage increasing visitor numbers while maintaining security. DAFF’s biosecurity deputy secretary Justine Saunders confirmed the pilot has already improved processing efficiency.
The Brisbane expansion follows successful trials at other major Australian airports. Eligible travelers now complete declarations online before arrival rather than filling out paper cards during their flight.
