The first of Qantas’ highly anticipated Airbus A321XLR aircraft is currently undergoing final assembly in Hamburg, Germany, with delivery expected within weeks. This marks a significant milestone for the Australian carrier as it prepares to launch the new narrowbody on domestic routes in June.
Fleet Expansion Plans
- 7 A321XLRs to enter service by mid-2026
- Total order of 28 aircraft
- Initial configuration for 197 passengers (20 business class/177 economy)
- Flexible cabin can be reconfigured with premium economy for international flights
Enhanced Passenger Experience
The XLR introduces several passenger-friendly features

- Additional lavatory brings total to four
- 23 more seats than Qantas’ Boeing 737s
- Streamlined cabin design for faster turnarounds
Operational Advantages
Qantas plans to initially deploy the A321XLR on domestic routes before expanding to short-haul
international destinations. The aircraft’s extended range (up to 4,700nm) will enable new point-to-point routes while offering superior fuel efficiency compared to older generation aircraft.
The XLR fleet forms a key part of Qantas’ domestic network renewal, replacing aging 737s while providing greater capacity and improved passenger comfort. Aviation enthusiasts can look forward to seeing the first completed aircraft in Qantas livery within weeks as it prepares for its journey to Australia.
