Pro-invest Hotels Achieves Green Key Certification for Sustainability

by Alice

Pro-invest Hotels has made significant strides in sustainable tourism, earning Green Key certification for a large portion of its hotel portfolio. The latest addition to the certified group is Hotel Indigo Sydney Potts Point. The certification is part of Pro-invest’s ongoing commitment to sustainability, with additional hotels like the Kimpton Margot Sydney, Sebel Canberra Campbell, and Hotel Indigo Melbourne on Flinders set to join soon. This will bring the total number of certified properties to 12, and Pro-invest aims to have 15 certified hotels across Australia and New Zealand by the end of the year.

The Green Key certification, managed by the Foundation for Environmental Education, is a globally recognized eco-label for the tourism and hospitality industry. It is awarded to hotels that demonstrate strong efforts in reducing their environmental impact, advancing social responsibility, and maintaining a commitment to sustainability through a detailed framework.

Hotels that receive the Green Key certification meet strict criteria, which include energy conservation, water management, waste reduction, sustainable sourcing, and educating both guests and staff on environmental issues. This certification ensures that participating hotels are leaders in sustainable hospitality.

Pro-invest Hotels selected Green Key due to its international recognition. With over 6,000 certified establishments in more than 70 countries, Green Key aligns with the Global Sustainable Tourism Council Standards (GSTC) and offers a tailored approach to the hospitality industry. Pro-invest is the first company in Australia to have so many hotels certified under this program, reflecting their commitment to sustainable practices.

“As eco-friendly tourism grows in demand, Pro-invest is focused on achieving third-party certifications that hold us accountable and encourage continuous improvement in sustainability,” said Jan Smits, Deputy Chair and CEO APAC of Pro-invest Group. “The hospitality industry has a responsibility to protect the planet for future generations, and we take this obligation seriously.”

Scott Mitchell, Director of the Australian Sustainable Destinations Alliance, presented the certification at Hotel Indigo Potts Point. The hotel has implemented several eco-friendly initiatives, such as donating 50 cents from every cocktail to Pro-invest Group’s RISE and CARE programs, using bamboo skewers and paper straws, installing water systems to reduce plastic bottle use, and switching to reusable linen napkins and eco-friendly packaging.

“Achieving Green Key accreditation is a major accomplishment,” said Scott Mitchell. “It shows Pro-invest and IHG’s dedication to environmental responsibility and offering guests an eco-friendly experience. The certification process is rigorous, making certified hotels true leaders in sustainable tourism.”

Sam Davies, Director of Operations for Australasia and the Pacific at IHG, added, “IHG is committed to sustainability, and we congratulate Pro-invest on their continued efforts and success in achieving Green Key certification for these hotels.”

Green Key certification provides guests with confidence that their stay is at a hotel actively contributing to environmental protection and social responsibility.
