AmaWaterways and Smithsonian Journeys have announced a new collaboration to offer exclusive cultural and educational experiences on select European river cruises beginning in April 2026.
The partnership will feature 33 cruises along the Danube, Rhine, Douro, Seine, and Rhone rivers. Each sailing will offer curated experiences that reflect the Smithsonian’s legacy as the world’s largest museum, education, and research complex, which spans over 175 years.
Passengers will have the chance to engage with Smithsonian Journeys experts who will guide them through local history, art, and traditions, providing a deeper understanding of the regions they visit.
“Our goal at AmaWaterways is to provide guests with immersive experiences,” said Rudi Schreiner, co-founder of AmaWaterways. “We want travellers to truly connect with the destinations, not just visit them. By combining our expertise in river cruising with Smithsonian’s educational approach, we offer a unique opportunity to explore local history and culture while enjoying exceptional comfort and service.”
Walter Littlejohn III, senior vice president of Smithsonian Journeys, expressed excitement over the collaboration. “We’re thrilled to bring the Smithsonian experience to Europe’s rivers aboard AmaWaterways ships,” he said. “Our commitment to lifelong learning inspires us to create authentic and enriching travel experiences. These new itineraries offer a chance for curious travellers to dive into the rich cultures and histories of countries like Austria, France, Germany, the Netherlands, Portugal, and more, through the unique lens of the Smithsonian.”
The cruises, which range from eight to 15 days, will include exclusive excursions, as well as pre- and post-cruise land packages led by an AmaWaterways cruise manager. Additional features include fine dining, unlimited beverages with meals, small group excursions, wellness programs, and airport transfers.
One of the new itineraries is Holland and Belgium in Spring: A River Cruise at Tulip Time, scheduled for April 2026. Other highlights include Cruising the Upper Danube: Romantic Ports from Bavaria to Budapest, The Grand Danube: A River Cruise from Germany to Romania, and Christmas Markets along the Rhine and Danube.
Bookings for the 2026 cruises are now open on AmaWaterways’ Australian and New Zealand websites.
