Vivid Sydney has canceled its popular drone show due to safety concerns and rising costs. Organizers announced the decision on Thursday, explaining that the event had become too complex to manage.
According to Destination NSW, the cancellation followed concerns raised by police and transport authorities regarding crowd control and the format of the drone show. While drone shows have wowed audiences in recent years, the risk of technical issues, such as drones malfunctioning and falling during events, has always been a concern for public safety. This risk was a key factor in the decision to cancel the 2025 show.
The cost of implementing necessary safety measures also increased significantly, making the event financially unfeasible. “The changes needed to manage the safety risks for Vivid Sydney 2025 would significantly raise costs,” said Destination NSW in a statement. “Given the overall rise in event costs, we have decided to reallocate resources.”
Despite the cancellation, organizers assure the public that Vivid Sydney 2025 will offer an even more engaging experience, with a greater number of free events than ever before. The festival, scheduled to run for 23 days in May and June, will follow the theme “Dream.”
Though full details of the new free events will be kept secret until next week, Destination NSW confirmed the complete program will be released on Wednesday.
