Croatia has officially been declared Europe’s top travel destination after an unprecedented public vote, further cementing its place as a must-visit global hotspot.
The announcement was made at ITB Berlin, one of the world’s largest travel trade fairs. Croatian tourism officials received the prestigious award from Maximilien Lejeune, director of European Best Destinations (EBD), after over one million travelers voted in favor of the country.
Croatia Outshines Competitors in Europe
In a highly competitive contest, Croatia took the lead, surpassing popular destinations like Spain, which placed second, Austria in third, Italy fourth, and Greece fifth. This achievement highlights Croatia’s appeal, known for its stunning coastline, historical towns, and vibrant culture.

Despite facing economic challenges and geopolitical uncertainties, Germany remains Croatia’s biggest source of tourists, contributing more than 20% of total overnight stays. In 2023, German visitors recorded over 22 million overnight stays in Croatia.

- Kvarner, with 4.5 million+ overnight stays
- Split-Dalmatia & Zadar counties, each with over 2.4 million overnight stays
