In May, the Sanpoku Revitalization Council will officially launch the “Sanpoku Bio-Regional Park” in Murakami City, located in Niigata Prefecture, northeastern Japan. The park aims to offer visitors a unique opportunity to experience the area’s pristine nature. Through activities like coastal exploration, traditional fishing, and sampling renowned natural spring water, visitors can discover the diverse biodiversity that the region has to offer.
The bio-regional park covers an area stretching from Kuwagawa to Ogoto and Fuya in Murakami City. This part of the Sanpoku region has long maintained a deep connection between nature and people. Its untouched landscapes reflect an environment that has remained unchanged for centuries.
To enhance visitors’ experiences, the council is introducing new tour options:
- Blue Tourism: Explore the scenic and natural beauty of the Sasagawa Nagare coastline.
- Green Tourism: Enjoy the renowned natural spring waters of Kichijou Shimizu and Karei-zan Shimizu deep in the mountains.
- Forest Tourism: Participate in “Kodo fishing,” a traditional method that has been practiced for over 350 years.
Blue Tourism
The Sasagawa Nagare coastline spans about 11 km, stretching from Mt. Torigoe (Hamashinbo) to Kitsunezaki (Samukawa). The area is recognized as a National Place of Scenic Beauty, a Natural Monument, and part of the Niigata Prefectural Natural Park. Known for its breathtaking coastal views, the area features dramatic rock formations, caves, and cliffs shaped by the sea’s erosion over time.
Forest Tourism
From late autumn to early winter, schools of salmon swim back to the Okawa and Gatsugi rivers in the Sanpoku district. The “Kodo fishing” technique, practiced in the Okawa River for over 350 years, is a historical method unique to the area. During peak fishing season (October to mid-December), the riverside becomes lively with local fishermen preparing for the salmon’s return.
Green Tourism
Niigata’s famous natural springs, including “Kichijou Shimizu” in the Ogoto district and “Karei-zan Shimizu” in the deep mountains, are celebrated for their purity. This region is known for its rich and diverse natural environment, where the mountainous landscape meets the sea, creating a unique ecological setting.
The launch of the Sanpoku Bio-Regional Park promises to offer visitors an enriching experience, highlighting the area’s rich natural heritage and long-standing traditions.
