The federal government has approved Qatar Airways’ acquisition of a 25% minority stake in Virgin Australia, paving the way for the airline to launch long-haul flights to Doha starting June 1. The investment by Qatar Airways Group received the green light from the Foreign Investment Review Board (FIRB) following an announcement by the Federal Treasurer.

This decision comes after the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) issued a draft determination on February 18, signaling its intention to approve the airlines’ integrated alliance. Final authorization is expected by March or April 2025. Virgin Australia is now awaiting a decision from the International Air Services Commission (IASC) on uncontested air rights for services between Australia and Qatar, set to begin in June. Initial flights will operate from Sydney, Brisbane, and Perth to Doha, with Melbourne services scheduled to start in December 2025.

Virgin Australia Group CEO Jayne Hrdlicka hailed the partnership as a transformative milestone for the airline. “Today marks a new era for Virgin Australia. Qatar Airways’ investment is a strong endorsement of our business and the Australian aviation industry. It positions us for long-term success and accelerates our ambitious transformation plans,” she said.

Hrdlicka emphasized the benefits for Australian travelers, noting that the alliance has already increased choice and value for flights to Europe, the Middle East, and Africa since tickets went on sale in December. “Domestically, we are performing better than ever in our 24-year history. Partnering with one of the world’s largest airlines gives us the scale and expertise to grow, compete effectively, and achieve our margin goals,” she added.

The CEO also highlighted the opportunities for Virgin Australia’s 8,000 employees, including secondment roles with Qatar Airways. “Our team has played a vital role in reaching this point, and many are excited about the new possibilities. The response to pilot and cabin crew opportunities with Qatar Airways has been extraordinary,” Hrdlicka said.

She expressed gratitude to the Federal Treasurer for the decision, which she said would benefit competition, consumers, and job growth. “This is a positive outcome for all stakeholders who rely on Virgin Australia’s success,” she added.

The integrated alliance will allow Virgin Australia passengers to seamlessly connect to Qatar Airways’ global network, offering over 100 new routes across Europe, the Middle East, and Africa. Additionally, the expanded codeshare agreement will provide enhanced points-earning and redemption opportunities for members of Virgin Australia’s Velocity program and Qatar Airways’ Privilege Club.

This partnership marks a significant step forward for Virgin Australia, bolstering its competitive edge and expanding its global reach.
