A recent survey reveals that global unrest and climate change are prompting New Zealanders to prioritize travel insurance for their trips. According to the latest Future of Travel study by Southern Cross Travel Insurance (SCTI), 73% of respondents feel uneasy about global conflicts, while 78% now consider travel insurance a high priority.
The 16-page report, published in February 2025, is based on a nationwide survey of 1,002 New Zealanders conducted in November 2024. It highlights how growing concerns over global instability and unpredictable weather patterns are reshaping travel habits.
Jo McCauley, CEO of SCTI, emphasized the impact of global conflicts on travelers. “Violence can erupt unexpectedly, and this is clearly worrying for many,” she said. “Nearly 80% of respondents said the rise in global conflicts has made them feel less secure and more likely to purchase travel insurance. We want to ensure travelers understand how insurance can help in these situations.”
However, McCauley noted that coverage for conflict-related issues depends on timing. “If a conflict is widely reported before a traveler buys their policy or departs, related claims are unlikely to be approved. But if the conflict occurs after the policy is purchased or while the traveler is already abroad, the situation may be different.”
Currently, SCTI and most travel insurers do not cover destinations experiencing active conflicts, such as Israel, Syria, Sudan, Iran, and Iraq.
Climate change is another major factor influencing travel insurance decisions. The study found that 75% of New Zealanders agree that unpredictable weather patterns and the increased likelihood of natural disasters make travel insurance more important than ever.
McCauley pointed to recent examples of climate-related disruptions. “We’ve seen a significant number of travelers affected by extreme weather events,” she said. “For instance, 1,425 customers were impacted by the Auckland anniversary floods, over 720 faced disruptions from Cyclone Gabrielle, and dozens were affected by severe winter storms in the USA. Travel insurance can provide crucial support for issues beyond travelers’ control.”
As global tensions and climate risks continue to rise, New Zealanders are increasingly recognizing the value of travel insurance to protect their journeys.
