As millions of Chinese citizens prepare for the Spring Festival holiday, teams of maintenance workers are working tirelessly across the country to keep the nation’s extensive train network running smoothly during the busy travel season.
The Spring Festival travel rush, which officially began on January 14, has placed increased demands on railway operations. Each night, at a train maintenance base operated by China Railway Jinan Group Co in Jinan, Shandong Province, six tracks are filled with high-speed trains undergoing thorough inspections after a day of service. The facility is brightly lit as technicians work diligently to prepare the trains for their next journeys.
“Our workload has increased by 25 percent during the Spring Festival travel rush,” said Tian Yu, a technician at the maintenance base.
Around 6 p.m., as trains arrive at the base, the night shift begins for the technicians. “Each train is inspected by a team of six ground maintenance technicians, a process that takes about three hours,” Tian explained. “We focus on critical components like anti-skid systems, braking devices, and electrical installations to ensure no potential issues are overlooked.”
The maintenance process is coordinated through a central control system in the dispatch center, which uses 12 high-definition screens for real-time monitoring to optimize efficiency. Before trains move to the maintenance tracks, they are first checked by an intelligent fault diagnosis system.
If the system detects any problems, maintenance technicians manually recheck the issues and conduct detailed inspections of the train components. This two-step process ensures the highest quality of maintenance and keeps the trains safe and reliable for passengers during the busy travel period.
Through their dedication and meticulous work, these technicians play a crucial role in ensuring the smooth operation of China’s railways during one of the busiest travel seasons of the year.
