Security Minister Chris Tang stated on Sunday that the government did not raise Thailand’s travel alert to red, emphasizing the need to accurately reflect the situation. His comments came during an appearance on a TVB programme, where he addressed concerns about human trafficking and scam operations in the region.
Tang clarified that victims were not kidnapped within Thailand but were instead lured there before being transported to other locations, particularly scam farms in Myanmar.
Last Friday, the Hong Kong government raised its travel alert for southeastern Myanmar to red, the highest level in its three-tier travel advisory system. However, the alert levels for other parts of Myanmar, Thailand, and Cambodia remain at amber, the lowest level.
“The victims were essentially lured to Thailand and then taken to scam farms in Myanmar. There have been no cases of kidnappings occurring within Thailand itself,” Tang explained.
He highlighted that certain areas in Myanmar are being used as bases for scam operations, guarded by military police and armed personnel. “That’s where the real danger lies,” he added.
When questioned about the government’s role in rescue efforts and reports of victims being released after ransom payments, Tang acknowledged that some individuals had returned without paying ransom. “In these situations, our top priority is to ensure the safe return of those affected,” he said.
Tang reassured the public that officials are exploring all available avenues to secure the safe return of stranded Hong Kong residents. He reiterated the government’s commitment to protecting its citizens while ensuring travel advisories accurately reflect the risks involved.
