IndiGo Accelerates European Expansion with New Flights to London, Paris, and Amsterdam

IndiGo, India’s largest domestic airline, is fast-tracking its entry into the European market, advancing plans originally set for 2027. The airline is targeting key destinations like London, Paris, and Amsterdam, aiming to gain a competitive edge over rivals such as Air India. This strategic move, revealed during the festive season, underscores IndiGo’s ambition to establish itself in the long-haul international travel sector sooner than anticipated.

To prepare for its European debut in the summer of 2025, IndiGo has begun recruiting for critical roles, including airport manager and chief security manager. The airline plans to fill these positions internally, leveraging its existing talent pool to support its expansion efforts.

In a significant development, IndiGo has signed a wet lease agreement with Norse Atlantic, a Norwegian airline, for up to six Boeing 787 aircraft. Two of these wide-body planes are expected to start operations by February 2025, with the remaining four set to join by September 2025. Under the agreement, Norse Atlantic will provide the aircraft and cockpit crew, while IndiGo will handle marketing and ticket sales. This partnership marks a crucial step in IndiGo’s transition into the long-haul market.

Additionally, IndiGo has placed an order for wide-body Airbus A350 aircraft in 2024 to bolster its long-haul capabilities. The airline is reportedly working to expedite the delivery of its A350-900 planes to support its European operations.

Recent regulatory changes have further facilitated IndiGo’s expansion plans. In late 2024, India extended its wet lease policy, allowing airlines to lease aircraft for up to 18 months, a significant increase from the previous six-month limit. This change provides IndiGo with greater flexibility and stability as it prepares to launch its European services.

IndiGo’s initial European routes will include flights to London, Paris, and Amsterdam. The airline plans to rely on internal teams or ground-handling agencies for operational support. Norse Atlantic’s Boeing 787-9 aircraft, featuring 338 seats (56 premium and 282 economy), will serve as the primary aircraft for these routes.

This move marks IndiGo’s first entry into the competitive India-Europe market, positioning the airline to challenge established carriers and tap into the growing demand for international travel. With its strategic partnerships, fleet expansion, and regulatory advantages, IndiGo is poised to make a significant impact on the global aviation stage.
